Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was born prematurely and only weighed two kilograms. She has many illnesses when she was very young.   A primary school has put up signs to warn phone-obsessed parents to greet their children with a smile at the end of the day rather than starting at their screens.

It has become a common sight at the school gates to see children running up to their parents, only to find them engrossed in composing a text message, a phone call, or scrolling through Facebook.

Now the headmistress at St Joseph’s RC Primary School, in Middlesbrough,

has erected the signs at all three entrances to the school in an attempted crack down.

The signs say: “Greet your CHILD with a SMILE, NOT A MOBILE” and feature a figure with mobile to their ear, crossed out in a red circle.

Liz King, headmistress at St Joseph’s, said: “We are trying to develop our speaking and listening in school and we thought it was a really simple way to get the message across.

“ It wasn’t an issue among our parents, it just emphasizes that speaking and listening helps the children to have discussions.”
